Chapter 100: Naihan, Are You Still Angry?
Fortunately, the last shred of rationality stopped her from doing so, otherwise, it would have looked like they had done something shameful.
She just awkwardly greeted her mother-in-law, “Mom.”
She didn’t know how long her mother-in-law had been watching at the door, and Yun Qinghuan felt uneasy.
Liu Yuzhi forced a smile. “Since Naihan has already bought it, you should keep it. It’ll be convenient for you to tell the time with a watch.”
“And don’t think it’s too expensive. We’re all family, no need to be so formal.”
“Yes,” Yun Qinghuan responded.
She couldn’t possibly throw away the watch. In this era, watches were major items, very expensive.
After Liu Yuzhi finished speaking, she told her to go take a shower quickly, while she closed the door and went into her room. Not long after, the sound of a sewing machine being pedaled came from inside.
The sewing machine was Liu Yuzhi’s dowry from her youth, and she treasured it greatly, unwilling to sell it even when life was at its most difficult.
Last time, when Yun Qinghuan went to the county and bought fabric, she had originally planned to spend some money to find someone in the village to make clothes, but Liu Yuzhi said there was no need to look for others, she would do it.
She just told Yun Qinghuan to tell her what she wanted.
Liu Yuzhi made very nice clothes and would occasionally help villagers make clothes to supplement the household income.
At this moment, Liu Yuzhi was probably making clothes in her room. She was usually busy and only had time to make clothes after lunch.
Yun Qinghuan looked down at the watch. In the end, she couldn’t resist trying it on her wrist. The watch had been thoughtfully set to the correct time, and it fit her wrist perfectly, and it was very beautiful, making her wrist look slender and fair.
Thinking that she would be taking a shower later, she carefully took off the watch. She would keep it for now. If her younger brother-in-law really got married in the future, she would save up some money and buy his partner a watch, as a way of returning the gesture.
She told An’an to go play under the tree for a while, while she went into the house, quickly wiped her body, changed into a clean set of clothes, and then went to the yard to draw well water to wash her clothes.
After washing, she lay down on the bed for a nap. Before falling asleep, she was still thinking that Bai Naihan seemed really angry, and she needed to find a way to coax him properly.
Yun Qinghuan spent the entire afternoon thinking about how to coax him. The weather was hot, so she planned to make liangpi (cold skin noodles). But the man who was usually in the yard all afternoon surprisingly stayed cooped up in his room and didn’t come out.
Yun Qinghuan walked to his door and tentatively raised her hand to knock, but she lowered it several times.
Fortunately, as it got dark and Yun Qinghuan was preparing to cook dinner, the man finally opened the door. He was stunned when he saw her, then pursed his lips and consciously leaned on his crutches to sit down by the stove to prepare to light the fire.
Yun Qinghuan tried to make conversation. “I was thinking of making some liangpi for dinner. What do you think?”
“I’m not picky.”
The man’s words were concise.
After speaking, he lowered his head in silence, not knowing what he was thinking.
Yun Qinghuan chopped dried chili peppers, making conversation with him as she worked. The man answered her questions one by one, but his attitude wasn’t as enthusiastic as usual, and he would never say a second sentence if one sentence could suffice.
After she said a few sentences, she stopped trying to make conversation. It felt dry and awkward.
She knew the man was really angry.
He had never treated her like this before, feeling like he was treating an outsider, his attitude neither cold nor warm, but it just made her feel uncomfortable.
Now, Yun Qinghuan suddenly understood why Jiang Wenxiu said Bai Naihan was difficult to get along with. His expressionless face alone made people feel very distant.
Even though his mouth answered, he was actually indifferent and didn’t care.
Yun Qinghuan felt a blockage in her heart. She didn’t say much more until the liangpi was cooked and rinsed in cold water, and the gluten was steamed.
In the evening, she directly mixed a large basin of liangpi, adding shredded cucumber, tomato, and carrot, making chili sauce to put in it, and then mixing in some garlic water and seasoning sauce. Even though there were still many missing seasonings, the taste of the liangpi was still very good.
When Liu Yuzhi came back from work in the evening and ate the liangpi, she praised it endlessly.
She had never eaten such chewy and delicious liangpi before.
She was also curious why these things could be made from flour.
Liu Yuzhi talked a lot with Yun Qinghuan, and An’an was also chattering non-stop. The more noisy it was, the more obvious Bai Naihan’s silence was today.
After dinner, Bai Naihan took the bowls to the kitchen to wash, and Yun Qinghuan followed him into the kitchen with the basin to scoop hot water from the big pot to wash up.
In the end, she couldn’t help it anymore and said directly, “Naihan, I also did some things wrong today. You probably bought the watch for me because you saw how much I liked it. This kindness is really touching. I should thank you, I shouldn’t have said those things.”
The man’s figure paused. Tonight was the first time he finally looked up at her.
Seeing him look at her, Yun Qinghuan felt encouraged. She raised her wrist for him to see. “Look, I’ve already put on the watch. You don’t know how much I like this watch. I even specially took it off when I was cooking just now, afraid of bumping or scratching it. Naihan, are you still angry?”
Seeing that he didn’t answer, Yun Qinghuan awkwardly coaxed him, “Don’t be angry, okay?”
The end of her sentence unconsciously had a slight upward inflection, and the corners of her eyes were red from the steam, appearing particularly moving under the dim orange warm light.
The man’s eyelashes trembled, his throat moving slightly in the shadows. In the end, he couldn’t resist her slight coquettishness and said in a low voice, “I’m not angry.”
He was just feeling a bit blocked and stifled in his heart after hearing her words in the afternoon.
He even had to be secretive about being good to her, not daring to be open and honest.
And she herself was completely unaware, saying things that stabbed him right in the heart.
“It’s good that you’re not angry. You didn’t talk much all afternoon, and I felt quite unaccustomed to it,” Yun Qinghuan said, letting out a breath and carefully observing his expression.
The man probably also sensed her unease. He rubbed the corner of his brow, his expression softening a bit. “Sorry, I was thinking about things all afternoon and wasn’t really present. It’s my fault if I made you uncomfortable.”
“It’s okay, it’s okay,” Yun Qinghuan waved her hand, feeling that he was being a bit too polite.
After the two of them spoke, there was another moment of silence.
Yun Qinghuan felt uncomfortable staying in the kitchen and directly scooped up the water and went out.
–
Some days later, the wheat in the village had almost all dried out, and what needed to be handed over had already been given. The village leader sent someone to announce that everyone should go to the village entrance tomorrow to distribute the grain.
This grain was the staple food for the second half of the year. Everyone was quite excited to hear about the grain distribution.
Yun Qinghuan was also very happy to hear about this from Liu Yuzhi. There was a simple granary at home, woven from bamboo, in Liu Yuzhi’s room. Liu Yuzhi said that it was already empty. In this era, as long as there was no grain at home, there was no sense of security, as they had been terribly hungry in previous years.
Early the next morning, Yun Qinghuan, Bai Naihan, and Liu Yuzhi took An’an and walked towards the village entrance.
Many people had already gathered there, chattering and smiling.
Because the road to the village entrance was very long, it wasn’t realistic for Bai Naihan to walk with crutches, so he was still in the wheelchair.
As a result, when they arrived at the village entrance, a very ordinary-looking, dark-skinned girl suddenly looked at Bai Naihan shyly.
