Chapter 96: Heaven’s Grace
The bookstore was small and almost empty.
Yun Qinghuan looked around and found that there were very few types of books. She flipped through them, originally planning to buy some high school tutoring books, but found that there weren’t any at all.
She could only buy a Xinhua Dictionary, intending to use it when she taught Bai Jin’an to read.
As soon as Bai Jin’an came in, his eyes lit up, and he ran directly to the comic book section. There were two or three other children buying comic books in that corner, showing that comic books were still very popular with children.
In just a short while, the little guy held several comic books in his hand, a thick stack, looking at Yun Qinghuan with some indecision. “Mom…”
Yun Qinghuan looked at him with a smile. “You can only choose one!”
She held up one finger.
Children should be taught the ability to make choices from a young age, especially since people shouldn’t be too sentimental.
Hearing his mother say this, the little guy visibly became much more disappointed, but he didn’t make a fuss like other children. Instead, he really seriously looked at the comic books and started choosing.
He even ran over to ask the owner how much these comic books cost.
Yun Qinghuan watched his series of actions, her lips curving into a smile. Then, she casually looked around the bookstore and chose two storybooks from this era for herself, both of the “red and expert” type.
Discovering that books could also be published in this era, her eyes brightened.
She had an idea in her mind.
Yun Qinghuan bought some pens and paper, took a Xinhua Dictionary and a storybook, and the little guy also chose his comic book.
She was surprised to find that the little guy had chosen the most expensive one among so many comic books.
She curiously touched the little guy’s head. “You’re quite clever, kid.”
He actually knew to choose the expensive one to buy.
The little guy pursed his lips and smiled, a little embarrassed. “Mom, can I buy another comic book with my own money?”
He looked up and asked her.
Yun Qinghuan was stunned for a moment, then reacted and asked him, “Do you have money?”
“Yes.” The child rummaged in his pocket for a long time and actually pulled out a handful of one and two fen coins, not knowing how long he had been saving them.
Usually, Yun Qinghuan and her mother-in-law would also give the child money to go to the small shop to buy snacks, but the amounts were small, one or two fen at a time. She really hadn’t expected that he hadn’t spent any of it but had saved it up.
Yun Qinghuan looked at him, speechless for a moment.
“Mom, An’an counted. I currently have about one yuan, two mao, and five fen, which is almost enough to buy a comic book.”
She looked at the other comic book in the child’s hand. It only cost eight mao, which was indeed not expensive. The comic book she had paid for was very thick and cost one yuan and six mao, which he couldn’t afford. No wonder the child kept asking the store owner how much the books cost when he was choosing – he was calculating here.
However, she wasn’t angry. After all, Bai Jin’an was the great villain in the original novel, an existence no less powerful than the male lead, only becoming a great villain because he took the wrong path and opposed the male lead. But he was definitely a very intelligent being.
She touched the child’s head and said with a smile, “Buy it if you like it.”
The little guy grinned, holding his comic books with both cherish and joy.
After buying the books, Yun Qinghuan waited for a while at the bookstore entrance and saw Bai Naihan coming out of the department store. She waved at him.
It was already late, almost one o’clock. The clock she had bought had also had the time set by the people at the department store, and she could clearly see what time it was now.
Having shopped until now without eating, her stomach had been growling non-stop.
Seeing that the man came out empty-handed, Yun Qinghuan was a bit surprised, but she didn’t ask. The three of them walked to an open space nearby, found a place to wash their hands, and started eating the roujiamo.
The roujiamo were large. Yun Qinghuan ate two, the little guy ate one, and the remaining three were for Bai Naihan.
As for the mung bean porridge, Yun Qinghuan and Bai Jin’an used bottle caps to scoop and eat it, while Bai Naihan drank directly from the pot.
After eating and drinking their fill, the bus back to town was just about to leave. The three of them got on the bus. Because this time they had the pickled plums given by the kind-hearted older woman, Yun Qinghuan held one in her mouth and didn’t feel so carsick.
When they arrived in town, Grandpa Li’s ox cart was waiting for them.
Seeing them, Grandpa Li waved. “Just waiting for you! Now that everyone’s here, we can go back.”
Yun Qinghuan was a little touched. “Grandpa Li, if you’re in a hurry to go back, you don’t have to wait for us.”
It felt a bit awkward to make so many people wait for the three of them.
“What’s the big deal? Anyway, there’s nothing to do going back now. Besides, everyone rarely comes to town, so it’s good to wander around a bit more,” Grandpa Li said with a smile.
Wang Shufeng and Bai Zhongshan were also there. When she heard Grandpa Li’s words, she pouted somewhat unconvinced and sneered, “Some people are just good at talking, but I haven’t seen any real action. If they’re really embarrassed, then don’t sit.”
She didn’t name anyone, but everyone on the cart knew she was talking about Yun Qinghuan.
Bai Zhongshan was a bit embarrassed and smiled apologetically at Yun Qinghuan before pulling Wang Shufeng, signaling her not to say anymore.
Wang Shufeng was a bit impatient. “Why are you pulling? Am I blind? What? Are you siding with others and not with me?”
She rolled her eyes at Bai Zhongshan.
Bai Zhongshan immediately stopped talking and smiled at her ingratiatingly. “Feng’er, don’t be angry. I’m on your side.”
Yun Qinghuan didn’t care about being mocked. Anyway, Wang Shufeng definitely disliked her. She pretended not to hear and directly sat on the cart.
She had bought quite a few things, and they were a bit heavy to carry, so she put them on the wooden cart.
This time, she had received one hundred and ten yuan in gaofei, and after this trip out, she only had twenty-odd yuan left.
She had bought a lot of things. If it were anyone else, they would definitely say she was wasteful, but Yun Qinghuan herself was very happy with her purchases today.
Wang Shufeng was still waiting for Yun Qinghuan to argue with her, but after waiting for a long time, the other person seemed not to have heard her and sat there quietly, ignoring her. Instantly, she felt a bit bored.
Especially after seeing Yun Qinghuan’s bulging bags, it was obvious she had bought a lot. Wang Shufeng then looked down at her own bag, which wasn’t as full as Yun Qinghuan’s. In other words, even the only thing she could boast about – buying things – had been outdone.
She curled her lip and snorted coldly, looking away without looking at Yun Qinghuan.
Yun Qinghuan: “…”
She was a bit speechless towards Wang Shufeng.
When they arrived at the village, it was only a little after three in the afternoon. The ox cart stopped right at the village entrance, and across the river from the village entrance was a large wheat field. Liu Yuzhi was currently drying and winnowing wheat in the wheat field.
Yun Qinghuan had just gotten off the ox cart and hadn’t even stood firmly when Liu Yuzhi came over.
Seeing that they had bought so many things, she didn’t ask much, helped carry the things down, and then looked at Bai Naihan, asking nervously, “What did the doctor say?”
She stared at his leg, afraid that the doctor had given bad news.
Ever since she knew her son was going to the county hospital to check his leg today, she hadn’t felt at ease. She hadn’t slept well last night, her heart constantly in her throat.
Even though she knew that it was already heaven’s grace that her son had survived such a serious injury, people were like that, always greedy. Liu Yuzhi had gone from hoping that her son could just survive to hoping that he could stand up and walk again.
