After a short break, the little one revived, pulling Yun Qinghuan along as they continued walking towards the foot of the mountain. During the time of cutting grass that followed, Yun Qinghuan was unusually silent, as if there was a clear line dividing her from Bai Naihan.
Even the small An’an sensed something unusual. He scratched his head, curiously looking at his mom, then at his little uncle. “Mom, did you have a fight with Little Uncle?”
“Huh? Why would you say that?” Yun Qinghuan paused in her grass-cutting, instinctively looking at Bai Naihan. She noticed he was also looking at her, and she awkwardly averted her gaze.
The little one casually remarked, “You’re not talking to Little Uncle. In the morning, you were talking to him all the time. You and Dad are like this too. If you don’t talk, it’s definitely a fight. So, you must have had a fight with Uncle.”
The little one seemed to have figured them out. “Adults like you are always like this. Unlike me and Wa Dan, we just fight and it’s over. We never stop talking.”
Yun Qinghuan: “…”
This little one was quite clever. Although she hadn’t had an argument with Bai Naihan, there indeed hadn’t been a single word exchanged between them for a while.
She gently patted the little one’s furry head. “We haven’t had an argument. Your uncle and I have a good relationship.”
Why does it sound a bit strange? Without thinking too much, she continued, “If you don’t believe me, ask your uncle.”
The little one actually turned to look at Bai Naihan. “Uncle, did you really not have a fight with Mom?”
Bai Naihan, whose gaze had been fixed on this side, smiled slightly upon hearing this. “No fight.”
Seeing Yun Qinghuan deliberately avoiding eye contact, he pursed his lips.
“No fight is good.” The little one sighed like a little adult. “We’re a family, and we should be harmonious.”
Although they didn’t have a quarrel, Yun Qinghuan and Bai Naihan didn’t exchange many words while cutting grass. They didn’t want the little one to think they were fighting again.
When they arrived at the pigsty, Qiao Yue was no longer there. Yun Qinghuan guessed she had probably finished her morning tasks and gone back to rest. Yun Qinghuan and Bai Naihan chopped up the grass and put it in the pig trough for the pigs to eat.
Upon reaching the pigsty, they noticed that the pile of grass they had just put there was all gone. The pigs, seeming hungry, gathered around when Yun Qinghuan poured more into the trough and devoured it.
Bai Naihan, hearing Yun Qinghuan’s comment, furrowed his brows and looked around. His gaze circled around the pigs in the left pigsty. “Has that Wang Shufeng finished cutting the grass?”
“Huh?” Yun Qinghuan followed his gaze and found the pigs in the left pigsty happily eating grass. “Maybe she has already cut a basket of it.”
Yun Qinghuan wasn’t sure, but seeing that there was still a lot of pig feed left in the adjacent trough, she was quite surprised. “I didn’t expect Wang Shufeng, who looks thin and weak, to be quite skilled at cutting grass.”
In such a short time, she cut quite a lot.
Doesn’t seem like someone who would do farm work, right?
Bai Naihan, upon hearing this, remained silent and just squinted his eyes for a while.
Seeing that there was still some time left, although Yun Qinghuan’s shoulders were a bit sore from fatigue, she gritted her teeth and planned to cut another basket of grass.
After all, these pigs still looked very hungry, and they probably needed to eat a lot.
Today was the first day of work, and she couldn’t let her mother-in-law worry.
By the time the last basket of grass was cut before noon, Yun Qinghuan’s face was flushed with heat, and she had no extra strength to cut another one.
She sat on a large stone next to the pigsty, not caring about the dirt, and waved at the man. “I can’t do it anymore; I need to take a break.”
Even Bai Jin’an, this little one, was tired and sat beside her on the stone, panting with his mouth slightly open.
The water they brought from home in the morning had also been consumed.
Yun Qinghuan was now only thankful that she had taken sun protection measures; otherwise, after half a day under the sun, she would undoubtedly have tanned several shades.
The man watched the mother and son sitting exhausted on the ground in identical postures, smiled with pursed lips, and pushed the wheelchair to the nearby chopping board to cut pig feed.
“Aren’t you tired? Take a break too.”
Yun Qinghuan looked at the sweat on his forehead and felt a bit sorry for him.
Although both she and An’an were quite tired, in reality, the combined amount of pig feed they cut might not even be half of what he cut.
Thinking about this, she looked at herself and Bai Jin’an resting here while Bai Naihan was chopping pig feed over there, and she felt a bit guilty. “Why don’t you take a break too? It doesn’t matter about this little bit of time.”
The man lightly chuckled, waved his hand, and wiped the sweat from his forehead with the towel hanging around his neck. “It’s fine, I’m not tired. I’ve had training much more exhausting than this before.”
Speaking of training, his gaze dimmed a bit.
Yun Qinghuan knew he was thinking about his discharge from the military, instantly feeling regretful. She quickly changed the topic, “By the way, what happened just now wasn’t intentional. Don’t take it to heart.”
Her gaze drifted, and she reached for her straw hat, deliberately avoiding eye contact with him.
The man’s chopping motion paused for a moment, then resumed naturally. “I know, I won’t take it to heart.”
“That’s good.” Yun Qinghuan breathed a sigh of relief. “Then let’s continue to get along like we used to.”
Saying this, she thought she had also rested enough. She stood up from the stone and intended to pour the chopped pig feed into the trough.
However, she found that the pig feed in the trough was all gone. “Do they eat this fast? It hasn’t been long.”
She was genuinely puzzled.
Wasn’t it supposed to be enough to feed these pigs with three big baskets of pig feed?
Supposedly, the three of them had each cut three baskets of pig feed.
Although Yun Qinghuan cut less pig feed compared to An’an, Bai Naihan cut a lot. These pigs have already eaten twice, yet why are they still rushing over, grunting and squealing like they’re starving, eager to eat again?
She looked at the other side of the pigsty and found those pigs eating leisurely, not at all anxious. The crucial part was that there was still a lot of leftover pig feed in their trough.
She squinted, feeling that something was off.
“Could it be that Wang Shufeng moved the pig feed from our trough to hers?”
It was not that Yun Qinghuan was assuming the worst about people, but this situation indeed seemed suspicious.
Bai Naihan also glanced over. “Let’s feed them first.”
“Okay.”
Yun Qinghuan felt a bit frustrated.
This was just her speculation, and she had no evidence to confront Wang Shufeng.
She could only find time in the afternoon to cut more pig feed and then figure out a way to catch Wang Shufeng in the act.
Seeing her disappointed expression, Bai Naihan’s eyes revealed a faint smile.
An’an rubbed his little head, glanced at his mom, and then at his uncle.
When their eyes met, he noticed his uncle suddenly withdrew his gaze, and his expression became a bit colder.
Bai Jin’an: “???”
The little head was filled with confusion.
