BCHG Chapter 50

“Mia.” Isaac’s voice brought me back to my senses. He handed me my fallen bag and said, “Let’s go inside for now.”

“…Yes.”

I staggered into the mansion. Raphael was in the lobby, but I didn’t even have the energy to greet him.

Isaac led me to the sofa in the parlor and instructed a maid to bring me some tea. Soon, the calming scent of chamomile filled the room. I gripped the cup tightly, staring blankly at the surface of the tea.

“So, who were those men?”

Isaac’s voice broke through the fog in my mind. I weakly looked up at him, my head throbbing.

“I don’t know…”

“From what I heard, it seems like you’re in a position where you have to repay your parents’ debt.”

“I don’t know much about it either…”

“Are you in contact with your parents?”

“…”

There was nothing I could say for sure.

Isaac fell silent for a moment, then quietly left the room. Why did he leave? I barely had time to wonder before the crushing weight of my situation came back to me.

I still owed 50 gold. Even if I used all the money I had, I wouldn’t have enough. Plus, if I didn’t repay it by next month, another 10 gold would be added in interest. I needed to find a way to repay the debt first, but how could I gather such a large sum? As I sat there, overwhelmed, Isaac returned with a piece of paper in his hand.

“Here, your resume has your guarantor’s address. Maybe they know where your parents are.”

His words sparked a glimmer of hope. I quickly stood up and took the paper. The guarantor’s address wasn’t far from here. I had to go find out what was going on.

“I’ll be back soon.”

“I think I should go with you.”

Considering the situation, I worried that Isaac might complicate things if he came with me. What if the guarantor welcomed me warmly, but I didn’t recognize them? Isaac might get suspicious.

“It’s okay. It’s nearby, so I’ll be back soon.” I gave a quick bow and hurried out of the mansion.

I had no idea who my guarantor could be. When I arrived at the address, it was quite an impressive house—not as grand as a noble’s mansion, but certainly well-off. Was the owner of this house my guarantor? Or perhaps one of the servants?

After taking a deep breath, I knocked on the door. A moment later, it swung open.

Oh, finally you’re he… Huh?”

The man who opened the door seemed to be in his fifties. He looked at me with surprise before his expression brightened.

Oh, Mia! Are you on a break today? I’ve been wondering why you haven’t visited in so long.”

“…”

“You don’t seem happy to see your father after all this time?”

At the word ‘father,’ my heart pounded. So this man is my father. The one who caused all this debt. I couldn’t believe how angry I felt toward someone I had just met. My fists clenched without me realizing it.

Just then, a noise came from inside the house.

Ah, dear… I’m busy today. Come back another time.”

“No. We need to talk now.”

I struggled to hold back the urge to grab him by the collar.

Seeing my murderous glare, my father clicked his tongue. “Fine. Come inside for a bit. I don’t have much time.” Reluctantly, the door opened further.

Inside, I could hear voices coming from the living room. Guests? As I looked around, I noticed a group of people sitting at the table, holding playing cards. In the center of the table were stacks of silver and gold coins. They were gambling. The house itself was filled with luxurious decorations.

“So, what brings you here?” Instead of inviting me to the parlor or living room, he stood with me in the foyer and asked casually.

I gritted my teeth before responding. “I’m here because of the debt.”

“Debt? Oh, that. So?”

His nonchalant tone left me speechless. My voice rose in frustration.

“Why do I have to repay your debt? 200 gold, no less!”

My raised voice seemed to make him nervous, and he quickly put a finger to his lips, gesturing for me to be quiet.

“There are guests here! Keep your voice down.”

“I can’t keep quiet! Why am I paying off your debt!”

As I shouted, his expression turned cold. He grabbed my arm tightly.

“What do you think you’re doing, talking like this to your father?”

“And what are you doing to your child, Father!”

“I can’t believe you’re acting like this over a bit of money.”

“A bit of money?”

I was dumbfounded. Calling a huge sum of 200 gold ‘a bit of money’ was absurd.

“If it’s just a bit of money, then you pay it off!”

“I’m working on it. One more big win and I can pay it all off.”

There was a disturbing confidence in his voice. He truly believed he could win enough through gambling to repay the debt.

Just then, a voice called out from the living room.

“What are you doing? Aren’t you joining the game?”

“I’ll be there in a moment!”

He tried to walk away, but I grabbed his arm, refusing to let him go. I couldn’t leave things like this.

“Go to the loan sharks now and tell them! Tell them you’ll pay the debt, and they should stop coming after me!”

Smack! My cheek stung as if it had caught fire. My vision blurred for a moment before it slowly cleared. He stood there, breathing heavily, glaring at me.

“You.” His tone was filled with disbelief, and I could see a flicker of betrayal in his eyes. “Do you even realize how much I’ve done for you! I’m just asking for a little repayment!”

“…”

“To think my only child would act like this… Get lost! Don’t ever come back!” He dragged me to the door and shoved me outside. The door slammed shut with a loud bang.

I stood there in shock, my cheek still burning. It took me a long time to fully grasp what had just happened. Finally, I realized there was nothing more I could do here, so I started walking back to the mansion.

What was I supposed to do about my father and about the debt that was in my name?

As I walked, raindrops began to fall. Soon, a heavy downpour drenched me, cold water streaming down my face. People around me rushed to find shelter, but I just kept walking, lost in my thoughts.

Suddenly, I noticed someone standing in front of me, blocking my path. Why were they standing there? Before I could question it further, the person held out an umbrella. When I looked up, I saw Isaac. His face, with a faint hint of concern, made my tears spill over.

Sob hic… Huaaaah…”

I didn’t even know why I was crying. I just felt overwhelmed by sadness. My tear-soaked cheeks were soon wet with rain as well.

As I sobbed, Isaac gently pulled me into his arms, holding me close. “It’s alright.” He whispered softly, the warmth in his voice like a comforting blanket from my childhood.

“It’s alright, Mia.”

Hearing his words, I felt a strange sense of relief, and my tears only flowed more. I clung to him, sobbing in the rain.

Isaac held me until I finally stopped crying. He waited patiently for a long time.

* * *

The next day passed in a blur. After I returned to the mansion soaked in rain, Isaac told me to rest, and I went straight to bed. The only clear memory I had was crying in his arms. I was surprised that he had held me like that…

“Mia?”

A voice called out, pulling me from my thoughts. I turned to see Raphael sitting on the sofa.

“Mia, you’ve been out of it yesterday and today. I asked for another cup of tea.”

Ah, I’m sorry, Lord Raphael…” I hurriedly refilled his cup.

Raphael looked at me intently before speaking. “You seem to be worried about money, Mia.”

I didn’t reply.

After the loan sharks came to the mansion yesterday, it was no secret that I was in financial trouble. I felt ashamed, even though it wasn’t my debt.

Raphael sipped his tea and continued. “Do you remember the offer I made before?”

“The offer…?”

“I said I’d pay off your debt if you became my maid.”
