———————————————————————————————————————————
Klaine had once gathered every bit of information about Shion in order to assassinate him. Naturally, that included data on his right hand, Iris.
“She changes lovers one or two times a month, totally lacking in decorum.”
Klaine had said that with a snort.
“All her lovers are younger men—mostly actors or musicians, apparently.”
He’d thrown around insults and sneers, but honestly, to me, she just seemed impressive.
A woman who held power in the shadows, surrounded by handsome lovers.
“I’ve been doing well thanks to you, milady, but if I hadn’t been able to adjust to the knights, I probably would’ve gone straight to her.”
Shion’s words snapped me back to reality.
In my past life, he had indeed struggled with the knight order, returned to the Imperial Capital, and shortly after sold the scandal of Viscount Roxane to his younger brother, helping him usurp the title.
It had only been possible because he met Iris.
In other words, because of me, he hadn’t even been able to begin his true calling.
“…So, you should meet Iris again?”
When I asked, Shion blinked at me like he had no idea what I was talking about.
“It’s hard to go see her for work… and besides, what could I even do in this situation?”
“Confess! You said it’s harder because you haven’t, right?”
I blurted it out instinctively. The desire to somehow get the two of them to meet was overwhelming.
“We just need to go to the capital, right?”
“Well… that’s true, but…”
“If I go out, you have to follow me, right?”
Shion’s expression changed in a complex way after hearing that. He blushed, then turned pale, as if his face was about to explode from tension.
He always got nervous around me, but this was on another level.
“Would you… really… really do that for me?”
I nodded as firmly as I could. Seeing his face light up with excitement made a small pang of guilt stir inside me.
Sorry, Shion. You’ll probably get rejected.
You’re three years older than Iris, and you’re not a pretty boy.
But I shook my head and brushed away the guilt.
Who cares about love? Do you know how hard it is to find a reliable and capable colleague?
“Let’s go see Theon. I’ve been wanting to visit the capital anyway.”
I grabbed Shion’s sleeve and led him into the mansion. My steps were twice as fast as before.
Let’s go, Shion. Time to get your heart broken.
And so, our outing was decided.
“Bleeegh—”
Shion crawled out of the portal on all fours, vomiting out what seemed to be everything he ate the day before.
“You okay?”
I approached to pat his back, but he waved both hands frantically to stop me.
“I-I’m oka—bleegh—okay… blegh! I’m okay.”
He tried his best to turn away, not wanting to show me how miserable he looked.
It’s just a little portal sickness. What’s the big deal?
I’d thrown up the first time I used a portal in my past life too. Right on top of Klaine’s head.
Maybe that’s why he bullied me afterward?
“My apologies, milady,” Shion said after rinsing his mouth with the water bottle I handed him. His neatly brushed hair was soaked in sweat.
“No worries. Keep it.”
Truthfully, I was a bit disappointed. That sky-blue bottle had been hard to get back from Theon.
Now the floral print was covered in vomit.
Shion finally seemed to recover and straightened his clothes. I handed back the bouquet I’d carefully protected, and he spoke in an almost-normal voice.
“Now that we’re in the capital, I know the way well, milady.”
We’d arrived near a bustling area not far from the imperial palace, thanks to a special permit allowing us to use the portal that connected the duchy to the capital.
“Where’s Iris’s tavern?”
“Very close. Just over there…”
The more we walked, the stranger I felt. I’d gotten lost running from Klaine in this very area many times in my past life.
His elite guards knew every alleyway around here like the back of their hands, so I never succeeded in escaping.
I’d only once found a good hiding place, but I got caught the moment I came out for food.
“Here it is.”
Shion stopped in front of a cozy-looking tavern, his face flushed with excitement, heart beating so loudly I could hear it.
Poor guy. I should at least comfort him if he gets dumped.
Shion handed me over to his younger brother, whom he’d summoned in advance. The man was massive—probably safer than Shion himself.
“I won’t be long, so please stay nearby. I leave her in your care, Sain.”
“Sure, I’ll go look around.”
I nodded and took Sain’s hand.
It was my idea to wander the streets on my own. It would’ve been awkward to follow Shion while he confessed with a kid tagging along.
He said it’d be quick, but they’d probably end up talking for a while.
Once he’s rejected and drowns his sorrows in a drink or two, he’ll realize just how perfect Iris’s tavern is for collecting gossip.
He’ll see how easily he can organize and analyze that information—and start wondering how to use it.
And after that, everything will follow the plan.
“Let’s head that way.”
Sain and I walked down a street lined with shops. I was quite excited too.
It was my first time walking freely through a bustling district filled with fruit stalls, clothing stores, and even ribbon-only shops.
“Looking to buy clothes?”
“Just window-shopping.”
“Want some fruit?”
“Let’s just smell it.”
I didn’t have money to shop, but it was still fun.
As we wandered non-stop, I spotted him—just as I was leaving a ribbon shop, happy after buying a tiny ribbon with a copper coin I found under the sofa the night before.
I froze instantly.
“…Milady?”
Sain looked at me in surprise as I stopped in the middle of the street.
But I couldn’t spare him any attention.
Sharp eyes, dark brown hair. A sturdy man in plain clothes—but I recognized him.
Captain of the 2nd Royal Knights, Gale Osmond. One of Klaine’s subordinates.
Around him were five similarly built men, clearly disguised as commoners. They were scanning their surroundings, reporting to each other in the alleyways—as if searching for someone.
My heart pounded.
I’d seen them like this in my past life, always looking for me.
Cold sweat ran down my back. My mind spun with a hundred thoughts.
Was Klaine already searching for me at this point in time? Had word leaked that I left the duchy?
“Sain.”
I turned my back to hide my face from them.
“Go back to the tavern alone. Bring Shion to the alley near there. Hurry.”
After giving him instructions, I dashed toward the only place that had successfully hidden me in my past life. I prayed Gale and his men wouldn’t find me this time either.
Tap, tap, tap…
The narrow alleys twisted and turned, some leading to dead ends. Relying on memory, I ran until I reached it.
Behind an old restaurant, a gap between buildings still remained.
If that space was still there, then the hidden area behind it should be too.
Step, step, step.
Footsteps followed behind me. From their rhythm, definitely soldiers. Gale’s men.
Whoosh—
Without hesitating, I slipped into the narrow gap. Between the shops, there was still a hidden space the size of a small room.
“Haa…”
“…”
I knelt, panting for breath—but then, I sensed something off.
“Haa, haa…”
“…”
It felt like someone else was there with me.
My heart sank.
Bracing for the worst, I slowly turned my head.
“…Huh?”
What I saw left me speechless.
“You…”
Pressed against the wall, just as terrified as I was, stood a boy who looked to be just over ten years old.
“Who… are you?”
The boy asked softly. He had jet-black hair and dark green eyes.
I’d never seen such a beautiful child in either this life or the last.
His hair was like black silk, his pale skin like porcelain. His features were already striking for someone so young—but his eyes were especially…
