In the evening, Wen Ke’an had barely written anything when Chu Han called her out to play.
Chu Han also needed to do an internship, and Xie Huaiyan directly arranged a position for her within the company. Now, everyone in the company knows that Chu Han is the fiancée of the president, and no one dares to mess with her except Xie Huaiyan. Chu Han’s work schedule is very flexible; she works when she feels like it and stays home when she doesn’t.
They agreed to meet at the intersection near the mall. Wen Ke’an had just arrived when she saw Chu Han already waiting for her.
“An’an!”
Seeing Wen Ke’an, Chu Han happily ran over and linked her arm with Wen Ke’an’s, cheerfully saying, “I found a really good sushi place. Let’s eat there today!”
“Sounds good.”
The sushi place was not far away, with a very unique decor style. Wen Ke’an and Chu Han opted for a small private room.
After entering the room, Wen Ke’an took off her coat. Chu Han stared at her neck for a while and slowly said, “Oh, no wonder you replied to my message so late.”
“…”
Wen Ke’an felt a bit embarrassed and instinctively adjusted her collar.
“You’re only twenty-one; don’t get pregnant too early or you’ll have to delay graduation by a year,” Chu Han earnestly advised.
Wen Ke’an wholeheartedly agreed and nodded, “You should also be careful.”
“I won’t; Xie Huaiyan is very cautious,” Chu Han whispered. “He thinks I’m still too young and doesn’t want me to get pregnant early.”
“So he takes very good precautions.”
“…”
They stopped discussing it as it was a private matter, and continuing further would be awkward for both.
The food arrived quickly, and soon all the sushi they ordered was served.
“Are you and Gu Ting planning to get married right after graduation?” Chu Han asked softly while eating sushi.
“Yes, that’s the plan,” Wen Ke’an replied. “What about you? When are you getting married?”
“I don’t know yet. I haven’t discussed it with Xie Huaiyan,” Chu Han admitted, feeling a bit lost. She felt that their current state was almost like being married, except for the legal aspect.
They ate and watched TV shows, reminiscing about their childhood.
“I want to take some to-go. Do you want any?” Chu Han asked after they finished eating.
“Aren’t you full?” Wen Ke’an asked softly.
“I am, haha,” Chu Han laughed. “But Xie Huaiyan likes this, so I want to bring some back for him.”
Wen Ke’an understood and smiled, “No, Gu Ting doesn’t like sushi.”
Chu Han called the waiter and ordered a sushi takeaway for Xie Huaiyan.
Wen Ke’an noticed that Chu Han had really changed. Whenever she mentioned Xie Huaiyan, her eyes were filled with happiness.
Chu Han is actually very pure. If she likes someone, that person will definitely feel her passionate and pure affection. And Xie Huaiyan is someone who lacks a sense of security. They truly are a good match.
“That’s wonderful,” Wen Ke’an said softly, looking at Chu Han.
“What’s wonderful?” Chu Han asked, puzzled.
The lights outside were dazzling.
Wen Ke’an linked arms with Chu Han and smiled, “You’ve also met the right person.”
In this life, Xie Huaiyan didn’t let go.
And in this life, Chu Han will certainly be happier than in the last one.
The days in June were getting hotter, and Wen Ke’an’s work was getting busier.
The main reason she couldn’t slack off at the company was that she had a new boss.
Her previous boss was a pretty easy-going sister, with a great personality, and was easy to talk to. But the new boss was very arrogant and often scolded the subordinates during meetings.
The office atmosphere was quite different from before.
Initially, Wen Ke’an didn’t mind, thinking that as long as she completed her work, the boss wouldn’t pick on her, no matter how bad her temper was.
But she soon realized she was wrong. The boss had an impressive knack for nitpicking and could magnify even the tiniest issues many times over.
Wen Ke’an later found that no matter how well she did her work, the boss would still criticize her. Over time, Wen Ke’an became more laid-back, and her first attempts at proposals became more and more perfunctory.
Whenever the boss saw her proposals, she’d be furious.
This time, Yezi went with Wen Ke’an to submit the proposal, both getting scolded, and the proposal was sent back for revisions.
Once out of the office, Yezi sighed deeply, “Sister Sun is too tormenting.”
“Yeah,” Wen Ke’an agreed.
“But Ke’an,” Yezi turned to Wen Ke’an and smiled, “You’re quite bold, daring to submit a blank proposal to Sister Sun. Did you see how red her face got from anger?”
“I didn’t finish it yesterday,” Wen Ke’an explained. “It needs to be revised a dozen times anyway, so it doesn’t matter if I do it the first time or not.”
“Haha, only you would dare do that.” Unlike Wen Ke’an, Yezi, who was also an intern but a senior hoping for a permanent position, didn’t dare to provoke the boss.
Wen Ke’an spent all afternoon on the proposal, frequently visiting the boss’s office for feedback.
She did it so often that the short-tempered boss finally snapped.
All the employees could hear the boss yelling from her office, “If you don’t finish the proposal today, don’t even think about going home! And don’t come to my office until it’s done!”
“………”
Wen Ke’an finally started to take the proposal seriously.
By 6 PM, most of her colleagues had left, and she finally completed the final version.
On her way to the office, she received a message from Gu Ting: “I’ll come to pick you up in a while.”
Wen Ke’an hurried to deliver the proposal, but she wasn’t sure if her boss was doing it on purpose, as she was asked to revise it again. Overall, her proposal had no major issues, just some minor details that needed tweaking.
Thinking that Gu Ting was probably already waiting for her downstairs, Wen Ke’an quickly finished the revisions and handed the proposal to her boss.
The boss glanced at it nonchalantly and said, “The concept of this proposal is not correct, it can’t be approved for now.”
“Redo it.”
“…”
Wen Ke’an, normally very patient, felt a bit annoyed this time.
She asked her boss, “Why can’t it be approved? You told me to write this concept, and now you’re not satisfied. Why don’t you revise it yourself?”
“The higher-ups have just issued a new directive; I can’t approve this.” The boss said, “If you want, you can get approval from the higher-ups.”
“….”
Two colleagues handling office tasks couldn’t help but listen in and thought this was clearly intentional bullying of a newcomer.
“Mr. Gu is here,” one colleague whispered.
The office door was open, and from their angle, they could see Gu Ting entering.
As soon as he appeared, the boss stood up, tidied her hair, and nervously but enthusiastically walked toward him.
“Mr. Gu, what brings you here?”
Gu Ting didn’t even glance at her. Instead, he looked slightly down at Wen Ke’an.
She was visibly upset.
Before Gu Ting could speak, Wen Ke’an stepped forward, handing him a file.
Gu Ting naturally took it and glanced through the project plan.
“What’s the matter?” he asked her softly.
Wen Ke’an, expressionless, asked, “Can you approve it?”
Realizing why she was upset, Gu Ting quickly replied, “Approved.”
“…”
Wen Ke’an then placed the proposal on her boss’s desk, collected her things without looking back, and went home.
Her colleagues, stunned, exchanged bewildered glances and murmured, “What just happened?”
Not sure if Gu Ting talked to her boss, Wen Ke’an noticed a sudden change in her boss’s attitude—friendlier and more respectful. Without the inexplicable harassment from her boss, Wen Ke’an felt much more relaxed and started enjoying her time in the office more.
One day, while eating at her desk, her colleague Yezi approached mysteriously and said, “An’an, our department is going for a team-building event next week.”
“Really?” Wen Ke’an paused mid-bite.
Yezi nodded, pointing to her phone, “The boss just announced it. Everyone has to go.”
“For how many days?”
“Three,” Yezi said. “There’s a famous summer resort in the neighboring city with immersive role-playing games. I’m actually looking forward to this team-building event.”
On the day of the team-building trip, the company had prepared a bus. The resort was only about an hour and a half away.
The team-building event included about thirty employees from their department. Wen Ke’an and Yezi sat together on the bus. Somehow, Wen Ke’an felt that some people kept looking at her and whispering.
Yezi noticed too, turned around angrily, and said in a not-too-soft voice to Wen Ke’an, “Some people in this company just can’t stop gossiping.”
“….”
“The weather here is so gloomy,” Yezi remarked, looking up at the sky in confusion once they reached their destination.
“It was sunny in our city earlier, but it’s completely overcast here,” she added.
Wen Ke’an glanced at her phone and said, “The weather forecast says there’s going to be heavy rain.”
“Really?” A team leader standing nearby looked at her own weather app. “It didn’t show any rain when I checked yesterday!”
“It’s true,” Wen Ke’an handed her the phone to confirm it.
“Luckily, we can enjoy indoor activities,” the team leader said. “But let’s hope the rain doesn’t get too intense.”
Just as they entered their mountain resort’s guest house, a bolt of lightning lit up the sky and heavy rain started pouring down.
At first, no one seemed to mind; they continued dining and having fun as planned.
However, when they woke up the next morning, the rain was still coming down in torrents.
“Why isn’t this rain stopping?” Yezi exclaimed as she opened the window, looking at the downpour outside. “It’s already been a day, and now it looks like a severe storm.”
Fortunately, their location on the mountainside meant the water hadn’t reached their accommodation yet.
After washing up, Wen Ke’an and Yezi headed out for breakfast. The room’s atmosphere was as gloomy as the weather outside. Wen Ke’an quietly ate the breakfast prepared by the guest house, without saying much.
Suddenly, a few colleagues, drenched from the rain despite their umbrellas, rushed into the dining room.
“There’s a landslide not far from here!” one of the men said, his face pale with fear. “It was horrifying; I saw a small village getting submerged.”
“That’s terrifying!” someone exclaimed.
No sooner had he spoken than the power went out, plunging the house into darkness.
“Seriously? Why is there no power?!”
“Could it be a circuit trip?”
“With this heavy rain, it might be a short-circuit.”
Despite the pouring rain, the guest house staff went outside to check the issue, while the colleagues inside stared at the relentless downpour, feeling a mix of emotions.
“What a way to ruin our getaway,” someone murmured.
“Might as well go back to sleep. My phone’s dead too,” another lamented.
People started to disperse from the hall. Yezi turned to Wen Ke’an to suggest returning to their room but noticed Wen Ke’an’s unusually flushed face. She looked unwell.
“What’s wrong, An’an? Why is your face so red?” Yezi reached out to touch Wen Ke’an’s forehead and murmured softly, “Could it be a fever?”
Yezi could tell Wen Ke’an was uncomfortable, so she quickly borrowed a thermometer from a store clerk.
Sure enough, Wen Ke’an had a fever, 38.5 degrees Celsius.
Fortunately, the guesthouse had some fever-reducing medicine. After taking the medicine, Wen Ke’an dozed off again.
But for some unknown reason, the medicine didn’t seem to work at all, and Wen Ke’an’s high fever persisted.
“What should I do?”
It was still pouring rain outside, and there was no clinic nearby. Yezi didn’t know what to do.
In the quiet room, Wen Ke’an’s phone suddenly rang.
Yezi glanced down; the contact name displayed was “Husband.” It should be An’an’s boyfriend.
Wen Ke’an hesitated but eventually answered the call.
“I saw on the news that there’s been a landslide there. Please don’t go out, okay?”
“Mm.” Wen Ke’an’s voice sounded hoarse as she responded.
There was a moment of silence on the other end. “Do you have a cold?”
“I’m fine.” Wen Ke’an’s throat felt like it was on fire.
Yezi saw Wen Ke’an place the phone on the bed. She looked very weak. Yezi hesitated but then spoke into the phone, “Hello, An’an has a fever. The fever-reducing medicine didn’t work.”
Everyone’s body reacts differently, so maybe An’an’s family would know how to help her better.
“Prepare more water, cold water. Help her cool down.” A clear male voice came through the phone.
Yezi was stunned upon hearing the voice. It took her a moment to react, “M-Mr. Gu?”
“There’s medicine I prepared in the side pocket of her luggage. The white packet contains fever-reducing pills.”
“Remind her to drink more water, please.”
In the past, Wen Ke’an would often get a fever in the summer and would usually feel dazed. Gu Ting was always the one to take care of her, giving her water and medicine.
Even though Wen Ke’an’s head ached now, she still remembered to tell Gu Ting not to come over before he hung up.
There was a risk of landslides outside, which was very dangerous.
In the afternoon, the rain outside finally lessened, and the sky began to clear gradually.
“Mr. Gu, why are you here?”
A few people playing outside in the rain saw Gu Ting approaching with an umbrella. They all stopped their actions simultaneously and looked at him in disbelief.
Without saying a word, Gu Ting walked directly into the house, his steps urgent.
When Gu Ting reached Wen Ke’an’s room, Yezi was sitting by Wen Ke’an’s bedside, playing on her phone.
Seeing Gu Ting enter, Yezi immediately stood up from her chair. “Mr. Gu.”
Gu Ting walked lightly to the bed, lowering his gaze to the sleeping girl. “How long has she been sleeping?”
“Over an hour,” replied Yezi.
Wen Ke’an woke up, and the first thing she saw was Gu Ting.
She thought she was hallucinating. Only after sitting up slowly did she realize it wasn’t a hallucination. Gu Ting was really there.
“When did you get here?” Wen Ke’an asked quietly.
Gu Ting had prepared some warm water for her. After handing it to her, he said, “Two hours ago.”
“I told you not to come,” Wen Ke’an said, her eyes reddening with anger, tears forming at the corners. “It’s dangerous with such heavy rain outside. I’ve had a fever so many times; a few sleeps and I’ll be fine.”
“The rain has stopped outside,” Gu Ting said, holding her hand. “There’s no danger.”
“But mudslides can happen at any time,” Wen Ke’an said, her mind much clearer after taking medicine. The thought of him braving the heavy rain to find her made her heart ache.
“I was wrong,” Gu Ting whispered, gently wiping the tears from the corners of her eyes.
She didn’t know why, but she had been strong before he arrived – she wasn’t afraid when trapped by the heavy rain or while dealing with the fever. But seeing him now, she couldn’t even describe her feelings. Maybe in his presence, she felt she didn’t have to be strong anymore. Wen Ke’an finally broke down, tears streaming down her face.
“Don’t cry,” Gu Ting said, sitting by the bed, pulling her into his arms, wiping her tears while comforting her softly. “I’m here.”
Wen Ke’an, completely unaware of the commotion outside, remained in the room with Gu Ting.
“Wow! What’s the relationship between An’an and Mr. Gu?”
“Could it be what the rumors say?”
“I don’t think so. Mr. Gu looks really worried about An’an.”
At five o’clock in the afternoon, the weather finally cleared up.
The air in the mountains after the rain was especially fresh. When it was time to eat, the staff at the guesthouse had already prepared the food.
“Should we call Mr. Gu out for dinner?” a staff member suggested.
Just as the words were said, everyone saw Wen Ke’an walk out wearing slippers. Her eyes were a bit swollen, clearly from crying.
Seeing Wen Ke’an come out, Yezi quickly went over and touched her forehead. “It doesn’t feel as hot as before.”
“Are you feeling better?” Yezi asked.
“Much better.” Wen Ke’an’s eyes curved into a smile as she softly responded.
“That’s good.”
After Yezi came over, several female colleagues also surrounded her. They first politely asked if she was feeling better, and then finally posed the question they were most curious about.
“An’an, are you and Mr. Gu… together?”
Before Wen Ke’an could respond, Gu Ting came out.
Everyone was still a bit intimidated by Gu Ting. After all, he was the big boss of the company and their superior.
“Mr. Gu,” everyone greeted him politely.
They watched wide-eyed as Gu Ting walked over to Wen Ke’an. The way he looked at her was very tender.
In the quiet room, everyone clearly heard Gu Ting’s words.
“We’ve been together for a long time.”
“We’re already engaged.”
