Letticia arrived at the liberal arts building classroom quite early. Even though there were still around 20 minutes until class started, surprisingly, quite a lot of students had arrived.
The moment Letticia opened the door and entered, the gazes of the students inside immediately turned towards her. After choosing an empty seat, a female student sitting nearby started a conversation.
“Um, are you from Count Sharon that entering the academy this year?”
The cautious girl, with milky beige hair that had a hint of green, asked. Not using a hostile tone, Letticia answered politely.
“Yes, I’m Letticia, daughter of Count Sharon. Count Sharon is my father.”
“Just as I thought! I’m Dayna, daughter of Viscount Hailey. Viscount Hailey is my father.”
Viscount Hailey’s name was familiar. It is said that he was one of the merchants of the southern region, a rising noble family that amassed great wealth through trade with the Amara Kingdom.
While dealing with Count Sharon on a very small scale, there were proposals to expand the business in the future.
After Dayna’s greeting, other students sitting nearby also took turns saying hello. There were some who were a little far away but came to say hello on purpose.
“Hello, Lady Sharon. I’m Ivonne Kathleen.”
“I am Dolores, daughter of Baron Erskin. Please take care for each other in the future, Lady Sharon.”
“I’m-”
Just entering the room, Letticia accidentally attracted the attention of her classmates, but she calmly smiled and kindly responded to their greetings.
Among them, the only one who introduced his family was Dayna who came from Hailey’s family. The remaining 10 seemed to all be junior nobles. Only junior nobles above can enroll in the academy.
“Nice to meet you all. Academy life may feel strange and a little uncomfortable, but let’s help each other and get along.”
Ivonne happily spoke to Letticia, who smiled cheerfully.
“Of course! Let’s get along well as fellow new nobles! Oh, just call me Ivonne. My father is still a Baron.”
“Then, please just call me Letticia too. There is no need to address me as Lady.”
“Oh, is that okay…?”
“We’re classmates at this academy. What’s wrong with that? Let’s be comfortable friends, at least within these walls.”
Everyone, including Ivonne and the other students, seemed happy with Letticia’s suggestion. However, the gazes of some students were less friendly.
“Wow, asking to be called by her name the first time they meet. That’s very rude…”
“I wonder why such disrespectful people entered the academy.”
“Is the academy still the same as before? It seems like an era where anyone can enter if they have money, regardless of tradition or lineage.”
The muttering was loud enough to sound like it was attracting attention. However, what surprised Letticia more than their words was their tone.
‘What’s that? Acting like a lady or something?’
The voices belonged to teenagers, but their exaggerated and ridiculous tone was similar to a clown playing a woman.
Even at gatherings or parties held at Count Sharon’s house, the ladies did not use such a tone.
‘Are they pretending to be like this just because they think they should do something like that in high society?’
Letticia casually mused, but the other rising nobles did not show her composure. Even the quiet-looking Dayna glared angrily in that direction, and Ivonne seemed to be trying hard to restrain herself from responding immediately.
‘I expected there to be tension between the old and new nobles, but… it was more annoying than I thought.’
Before entering the academy, Letticia had only met distant relatives of the old nobles. She never expected such a confrontation from day one.
Wondering if she would have to endure this every day, Letticia was about to sigh when Ariette came in, smiling and greeting everyone.
“Oh, hello! I’m Ariette, daughter of Duke Averil…?”
The original protagonist, depicted as an angel, appears confused in the strangely frozen atmosphere of the classroom.
Two female students nearby approached him, greeting happily as the first day, which was originally meant to start with a cheerful greeting, took an unexpected turn.
“My goodness, meeting the famous Lady Averil like this! I am from Viscount Kairon’s, Josephine. Viscount Kairon is my uncle. Nice to meet you.”
“I am Sofia, daughter of Baron Hillmarin. Baron Hillmarin is my father.”
“Ah, yes… Nice to meet you.”
“Well, don’t just stand there, come over here and sit down.”
Somewhat surprised by their proactive approach, Ariette nodded passively. However, the two seemed oblivious to her attitude, exaggerating their words as if trying to gain her favor.
“By the way, I’ve never seen blonde hair this beautiful before. It’s like they melted gold to make your hair!”
“It’s true, blonde hair is the best. It’s very dignified, unlike tacky pink that hurts the eyes. It can’t even compare to the gaudy bejeweled wealthy rich!”
Faced with their blatant flattery, Letticia wondered if she should mock them too.
‘Judging someone based on their hair color, really?’
It wasn’t just Letticia who had this thought; The new noble students, one by one, began to mock them, looking at them with disdain.
“Ha, they talk nicely to people who don’t even have the money to wear much jewelry. They should at least show off a little bit.”
In response to Ivonne’s straightforward comment, the girl who introduced herself as Sofia glared at her.
“How dare a wealthy rich people who doesn’t have a penny speak like that to the nobility? In the past, they would have been whipped and thrown out for disrespect!”
“Perhaps the era is different now, but nothing has changed. We and you have different pedigrees. No matter how the wealthy rich family accumulate their money, they can’t buy honor.”
“Even if times have changed, some things remain the same. Our lineage is different from yours. No matter how much rich people hoard money, they cannot buy honor.”
In response, Letticia chuckled, attracting the attention of the entire class, although the sound was not very loud.
“What, what’s with the sudden laughter?”
Even though Josephine tried to look at Letticia forcefully, Letticia continued to find it cute.
“I just didn’t expect to hear that in a world where some people sell their entire bloodline due to lack of money. There were even divisions among the so-called neutral factions. A world where the heir of an old noble family marries into a new noble family, and another where a new noble family bought out an entire old noble family, inheriting not only the fortune but the entire bloodline.”
“In the first case, they might bring in a son-in-law or daughter-in-law temporarily, but in the second case, they can’t even inherit the bloodline. It means giving up everything – family assets, history, honor – essentially selling and giving up everything, including their status.”
“Of course, the latter is extremely rare, but the fact that it is possible makes the notion that honor cannot be bought with money absurd.”
“Do you think the honor bought with money is real?”
“Well, a title bought with money is real, for starters.”
“Real? How dare you speak to a noble like me informally like that?”
“That’s what I wanted to say. Where would a viscount’s niece dare speak so informally to a Count’s daughter? Back then, you wouldn’t even raise your head in high society.”
In response to their previous statement, Josephine looked at Letticia with an almost frothy expression. However, no matter how deadly his gaze was, it barely affected Letticia.
Instead, it was Ariette who looked shaken.
“Please, stop this. We don’t need to fight on the first day…”
“Lady Averil! Don’t just let that happen!”
“That’s right. You have to show the wealthy rich people their place. Otherwise, they will continue to crawl around and disrespect the lady!”
“I mean…”
It was sad to see Ariette, who did not know the situation and had no reason to fight, provoked.
At that moment, while Ariette was looking helplessly between the two and Letticia, the professor from the liberal arts department came in, bringing order to the chaos.
“Now, let’s start the class. Everyone, please take a seat.”
Hearing the words of the professor, who organized the entire battle, the students reluctantly took their seats.
Ariette continues to sit next to Josephine and Sofia, while Letticia also sits next to Dayna.
However, unlike other quiet students, Letticia’s mind was in complete chaos.
‘Are all old nobles like that? Are they really old nobles?’
Although the rise of commerce led to the fall of many petty nobles who were unable to keep up with the times, still more than half of the imperial nobility were considered old nobles.
‘To survive in a place full of such people. The difficulty level skyrockets.’
Camilla, who was born into an old noble family, received protection based on her lineage even after becoming Countess of Sharon. However, her daughter Letticia may not be protected.
Being the daughter of a titled noble but surrounded by people who speak informally, there is no guarantee that Letticia will not encounter such people.
‘Is there no way to destroy those people?’
Glancing briefly at Sofia and Josephine who were still by Ariette’s side, Letticia held her breath.
Ariette herself doesn’t seem to have any hostile thoughts towards Letticia, but if a conflict arises, Letticia will be the one at a disadvantage.
‘I may not mind being buried, but I would rather not be forced to be buried.’
Hiding her awkward feelings, Letticia focused on class.
